The treatment protocol of the RatokŪtherapy

The RatokŪtherapy is usually performed based on the following protocol, to be adjusted according to individual response or special patient requirements (people from foreign countries or locations far away from the Medical Dermatologic Centre of Milan for the focused treatment of vitiligo by means of an advanced technology).

First cycle: includes 10 30-minute sessions, once or twice daily over 5 days. Fewer sessions are provided for in this cycle if reaction is good and the achromic surface is limited.

The first session takes place after a dermatological examination; computer-based filling of the medical report; RatokŪderm computer dermotopography by means of a fluorescent-light scanning generator for patch identification and percent calculation of the affected skin surface; computer recording and filing of fluorescent-light images for comparison of the achieved results; MED (Minimum Erythema Dose) test for determination of patient reaction to microphotoirradiation. The test’s result is checked after 24 hours (Schemes A, C, E).

Second cycle: takes place 5 to 10 days after the first and usually includes, based on follow-up checks, 2-3 30-minute applications, possibly during the same session, and repeated 3-4 times at 1-2 week intervals.

Third cycle: 3 30-minute applications or more, possibly during the same session, and repeated after 3-4 weeks; this cycle should be repeated until completion of treatment, which may last as long as 24-36 months in particularly persistent cases. In this respect it should be noted that positive results are achieved more quickly with vitiligo patches located on the face, compared to those located on the upper limbs.
